Selecting a PEO

The National Association of Professional Employer Organizations (NAPEO) estimates that there are over 700 Professional Employer Organizations (PEOs) in the United States. While many are high quality companies it can be difficult to determine which PEO is right for your business. Even if you currently use a PEO it pays to know your options.

At EmployHR.com we suggest speaking with a few PEOs in order to establish which company offers the type and level of services you need. When you meet with a PEO make sure you review the following:

  • Check the background and capabilities of the PEO to ensure they're able to meet your needs
  • Ensure that the company is a member of NAPEO, the national trade association of the PEO industry
  • Check the firm's financial background, including banking and credit references.
  • Verify that the PEO's payroll taxes and insurance premiums have been paid.
  • Review the service agreement carefully assessing whether or not the respective parties' responsibilities and liabilities are clearly laid out.
  • Check PEO references and business relationships.
  • Ensure that the PEO's benefits are properly funded.
  • Review the company's administrative and risk management service competence, experience of their internal staff.
  • Analyze how a PEO's benefits are structured and determine if they fit the needs of your employees.
  • Finally, if your state requires a PEO to be licensed, certified or registered, make sure that the PEO meets all such requirements.
